CCIQ encouraged by latest ABS employment numbers
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) welcomes the release of ABS data showing an increase of 11,300 full-time jobs in Queensland during November.
CCIQ Director of Advocacy Nick Behrens said the figures were encouraging and hopefully employment had reached a positive turning point in the state.
“The unemployment rate in Queensland fell to 5.9 per cent (from 6.1 per cent in October) and this will help strengthen consumer and business confidence, boding well for the upcoming peak retail season,” he said.
“There is more work to be done, with 149,000 Queenslanders still unemployed and persistent drought and weak mining conditions impacting many parts of Queensland.”
Mr Behrens said that although concerns remained with the data, the results indicated that the economy was heading towards positive territory.
“We really hope that these results are the start of a sustained trend for Queensland rebalancing towards a more diversified economy after years of resource driven growth,” he said.
