3 free quick and easy tricks to increase your reputation with google
If you’re not on Google, you may as well not be on the internet. Google suffered an outage for 5 minutes back in 2013 and it resulted in a drop of 40% in global internet traffic.
To think that one company is responsible for almost half of the world's internet traffic, blows my mind. Regardless of your thoughts on Google, it is a company your website needs to make friend with.
Getting a good reputation with Google is no easy feat. There are many angles to work and processes to maintain to ensure Google knows who you are and which people to send your way. Probably the most complicated is to ensure your website is adequately Search Engine Optimized (SEO). We’ll cover that in more detail in a future post, but for now, I want to share a few quick and easy tasks to help increase your reputation with Google.
#1 - Register your site with Google Search Console
Google works by scanning a known list of websites on a regular basis and creates a summary of your site. This process is called indexing. It calls on that index data when someone is searching for terms related to your site.
The Google Search Console allows you to add your site to the list that Google scans. Once you’ve validated yourself as the site owner, you’re able to upload your website's sitemap which tells google all the pages you want it to index.
Also, if your website has products, events or reviews that you want to promote, you can also use their Structured Data tool to tell Google the key points you want to highlight and google will display them when your site shows up in the search results.
While you’re in there, you can also learn more about your site, such as who’s linking to you, what people are searching to find you and any security issues Google has found on your site.
#2 - Register with Google My Business
Google Search Console is where you register your website but Google My Business is where you tell google about your business. Here you can set your business hours, address and phone number, so that this information shows up in Google Search and Maps.
Sounds simple, but the validation of your address can be a bit of a pain, as Google sends you a postcard with a verification code on it to ensure you are located where you say you are. This can get complicated, so thankfully Google has recently started verifying companies by other means.
Once setup, Google creates what it calls a “Brand Account” for you. This allows you to manage all google services, like Google+ and YouTube, from the same account.
#3 - Setup a Google+ account
Once you have registered with Google My Business and have your Brand Account, you should populate some information in your Google+ page. It allows you to share videos, pictures, links and other content with people who have specified similar interests. Google+ has struggled a little in the past with it’s social media reputation due to low engagement in comparison to the other big players. So why do this as well as sharing content across all your other Social Sites? Because we want to make friends with Google.
By doing these 3 easy steps, Google will have more specific and accurate information about you and your business, which will increase your reputation with Google. The more Google knows you, the better quality of people it will send your way. All this, without spending one dollar on advertising or spending hours refining your website to ensure it contains all the right keywords.
